British Military Cross Gallantry Medal EIIR . An ornamental cross with straight arms terminating in broad finials decorated with Imperial crowns. The royal cypher appears at the centre and the cross is suspended from a plain silver suspension bar. Ribbon - 3 Equal bars of white, deep purple and white. This Gallantry medal was awarded only to officers when it was first introduced 31st December 1914. This medal become available to all ranks when the Military medal was discontinued in 1993. Unlike the Victoria Cross this medal was issued to serving forces who survived campaigns.
