Item - Genuine Miniature Medal in mint condition with ribbon.

History and medal information - Obverse - The effigy of the reigning sovereign; Reverse - a vie of the Royal Research Ship DISCOVERY with a man-handling sledge party in the foreground.  Originally issued in silver to officers, in bronze to petty officers and ratings, but the bronze medals were discontinued in 1939 and since the only silver medals have been awarded. Only three women have received this medal: Lady Virginia Fiennes, and one other the NZ scientist Mary Bradshaw. The Polar Medal was issued for Arctic service as well.
