History and medal information - The eight-pointed Maltese cross in white enamel without the lions and unicorns (Grand Cross and Justice) or with lions and unicorns (Grace and Sub-Prelate). A Sub-Prelate is an Order Chaplain who held high rank in the Church as distinct from the Order. The Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem was incorporated by Royal Charter of Queen Victoria. Her Majesty the Queen is the Sovereign Head of the Order.
