History and medal information - British Military Medal This Gallantry medal was awarded in Silver for the genuine version. The MM (Military Medal) was born out of close combat conditions of warfare during the First World War and the need to recognise the almost daily acts of Gallantry/ Bravery in the face of the enemy under terrible conditions which fell below the Victoria Cross and DCM (Distinguished Conduct Medal). This medal was rendered obsolete in 1993 when the Military Cross become available to all ranks.
